इस वाक्यांश का प्रयोग ई एच कार्र (Edward Hallet Carr) ने  अपनी पुस्तक व्हाट इज हिस्टरी – What is History  के पहले अध्याय - द हिस्टोरियन ऐंड हिस फेक्टस – The Historian and His Facts में किया है।

लेखक इस वाक्यांश  का महत्व बताते हुए लिखता है कि इतिहासकार को इतिहास लेखन करते समय जो तथ्य – Facts स्थापित दस्तावेज़ों से प्राप्त होते हैं उनको इतिहास लेखन के लिए प्रयोग करते समय जिन व्यक्तियों का इतिहास है, उनके मन पटल पर क्या चल रहा था उसको जानने के लिए इमेजिनेटिव अन्डरस्टैन्डिंग – Imaginative Understanding का प्रयोग करते हुए उनके मन से संबंधित तथ्यों का प्रयोग करते हुए इतिहास तथ्यों को देखना चाहिए। 

अंग्रेजी में लिखी पंक्तियों को यहाँ इस प्रकार से लिखा है।

ई एच कार्र लिखता है कि इतिहास लेखन तब तक संभव नहीं जब तक इतिहासकार अपने विषय के व्यक्तियों के मन पटल से जोड़ने में सफल नहीं हो जाता।

History cannot be written unless the historian can achieve some kind of contact with the mind of those about whom he is writing.
